Who we are
Budoshin Japanese ju-jitsu classes are currently offered on Sundays at 2 pm and Mondays and Thursdays at 8 pm at Old Town Martial Arts, located at 1011 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. Old Town Martial Arts also offers classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and karate. Cross training is encouraged but not required.
Our Budoshin Japanese ju-jitsu classes are primarily focused on self defense. The curriculum includes a variety of techniques, including throws, sweeps, trips, joint locks, chokes, punches, kicks, and other strikes. Topics such as risk avoidance, situational awareness, de-escalation, proportionality, and dealing with weapons are incorporated into the training.
Our typical class structure includes stretching and warm-up exercises, technique instruction and drilling, and light free sparring. Students practice rolling and break-fall techniques to help ensure safety, which is emphasized at all times. Basic Japanese terminology is taught, as are traditional martial arts customs and courtesies.
Classes are open to anyone 13 and older, and they offer an excellent complement to other martial arts training. A high degree of physical fitness is not required, and classes are adaptable to individual students' physical limitations.
Our curriculum is based on the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu system developed by George Kirby, derived from the teachings of Jack Seki. We are members of the American JuJitsu Association and adhere to their standards.
Classes are led by John Valceanu, who has been teaching ju-jitsu since 2019. He holds second-degree black belts in Budoshin Japanese ju-jitsu and the Korean martial art of hapkido. He currently also trains and occasionally competes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and judo.
